ah, back to the blog again! i have been remiss in chronicling my artwork. perhaps it is because i have fallen away from my original path. i am a good starter and then tend to drift away. the meditating is not happening at all. or i should really say that i am not taking care to meditate daily. i really have a problem adhering to a daily routine. what is that all about? i am re-committing myself to meditation. i don’t believe that the connection between meditation and the creative process is a direct one. (which is something i learned!) the daily spiritual practise creates a calmer and more centered me from which to create.

i am also embarking on a 52 week project: 1 new material, media, project, technique per week. a bit more focused experimentation using research and a weekly (not daily, necessarily) goal. i am excited about this. my first project is an altered textbook from 1898. i am only folding, cutting, ripping, tying, and perhaps molding the pages. will post when finished.

i do reserve the right to change the order of my weekly projects, but i will make every effort to accomplish something in each project undertaken, regardless of inspiration or not.

been thinking about writing and now that i am here, i am so pleased! i have been wandering to other blogs as i check my emails from various online groups. so many fantastically talented people!

speaking of wonderful artists, i attended a show this last weekend at vino piazza in lockeford, ca. it was an art show with 4 very different and talented artists: mira woodworth, glasswork; ken woodworth, surreal pencil art; tony segale, watercolors; and the show organizer and resident artist at dos pasos winery, david jon foster, acrylic abstracts. the show was outdoors and also inside. so much inspiration!

so,… i am working on a focus for this next year of art. am working on a mask series for a show in october. the title was first “unmasked” – not too original, but meaningful to me. i was going to portray different aspects of myself, that i would discover while making the masks. ha! when i began with my first 2 masks, it was apparent that this was not my path to take. the masks were layers and layers meant to uncover my true self, but no true self was uncovered, only confused. i have renamed the series “layers”. and am ready to continue on that more appropriate idea.

so funny how you can begin a project with something in mind, but it takes on a life of its own and takes you where it wants to go! it’s good to be involved with a piece of artwork as an interactive conversation.

i am also thinking how rewarding it is to write after being away from journaling for 2 months. path is clearing and i have renewed energy.

have been cleaning up the studio – organizing, sorting, discarding (so hard to do!) have more to do today. also feeling the beginnings of a new mask in my day. (or week)

time to go to the park with my dog, zoe, and then to the studio.

i have been working on the census and not in the studio. yesterday afternoon i had some time to finish a collograph print and work on a mixed media collage i started weeks ago. i’ve been needle-felting pins at night. the texture is so soft and warm; the colors so rich; the results so immediate-i don’t have to wait for anything to dry! this morning i will be photographing and posting some felted brooches on my etsy site. i want to thank Tricia Cook who inspired me with her needle felting and in particular, an ATC which i traded for and a felted brooch as an extra.

productive day in studio yesterday. made a plate for a collograph print. will wet my watercolor paper, “ink up” plate and print by hand burnishing. can’t wait to see what it looks like!

surge of atc making yesterday for atc_world swaps i have joined- dogs, hats, & flowers. i have been reading anne baldwin’s book and looking at the work of various mixed-media artists. I was inspired to try some new techniques on an old mixed media piece. The original piece was on canvas covered with foam, beads, washi, and painted geometric and free form symbols in a squares configuration. i added different squares of text and images, then covered everything with acrylic glazes. i did a bit of bubble wrap printed as well. these first 2 layered collage pieces have lots of movement, geometrical images, and seem to be a series – as they are similar in impression. i worked intuitively and quickly, so as to avoid too much cogitation. i am happy with this piece. a good progression in my experimentation with painting and collage techniques. i am going to work on a fresh canvas today and/or begin a plate for a collagraphy piece.

inspirations happened! Began to read CREATIVE PAINT WORKSHOP for Mixed-Media Artists by Ann Baldwin. Fantastic Book!!! I enjoy her artwork: lots of layering with paints, images, text, texture. Step by step ideas for layering. I need this to delve into a deeper and more complex level of working. My first attempt is a bit heavy handed, but satisfying. I think i finished it yesterday. I will go take a look and see if it is indeed done. I almost obliterated my earlier layers with layer painting layers. But it was great fun and I really liked learning to work in a different way. I stepped out and took some risks! yeah! My first 2 layers were lovely paint and rice paper; resembling a flower. Nice, pretty, but not much depth. I left the canvas like this for a couple of weeks and finally went in with a pen and wrote text all over, then painted with acrylic glazes over the top. The glazes turned out less subtle than hoped, but the piece is bold, exciting, and interesting. It’s a good start. I have to keep telling myself not to be afraid to go forward. I am afraid I will ruin what I have already done. I am learning to have less attachment to each piece. To have more of a stake in experimenting and achieving an unpredictable and interesting work. If I don’t like the way it turns out, then I begin again.

My creative juices are not too juicy the last few days….I have lots of unfinished ATCs. Can’t seem to conclude them. My newest large collage is sitting on my desk as it was a week or so ago; not sure where it wants to go. i like it where it is, it’s minimal, but not done. Afraid I’ll ruin it…? I will wait until I have an inkling about the next step. The same with my newest mask. I have the beginning layers, but not sure what the next layer will be. My friend Pam brought over a Somerset SEW magazine for me to peruse. It has some wonderful fabric art inspirations. So, today, I’ll go into the studio, look at that mag, my new painting techniques book, and open myself to inspiration.
